The is a definite article that indicates definate reference (English "the") and there is an indefinite article that indicates indefinate reference (English "a" or "some").

Some lunguages such Russian or Chinese have no articles.

Languages that have gender usually have their article agree with the gender of the noun (French "le" masculine, "la" feminine)).

Usage of article may vary between languages. For example French uses its definite article in cases where English uses no article (example?).
