Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Released in 2001 for the Playstation 2 console, and re-released in 2002 as Metal Gear 2: Substance for the Playstation 2, X-Box, and PC platforms.
The latest game in the Metal Gear series, Metal Gear 2: Sons of Liberty extends the series plot line and introduces a new main character into the series. For the first time in the series, Solid Snake is not the playable character in the majority of the game. Instead players control Raiden, a new member of Foxhound fresh from VR training.
The gameplay is largely unchanged from Metal Gear Solid, only slightly refined, allowing players to take 1st person aim when shooting and giving players the option to tranquilize, instead of kill, their enemies. Cinema sequences become a principal part of the game, even moreso then in Metal Gear Solid.
The game takes place after the Shadow Moses Island Incident in Metal Gear Solid. Since then Metal Gear REX blueprints have been sold to the black market by Revolver Ocelot, and many nations now have REX in their arsenal. Now a part of an anti-Metal Gear group "Philanthropy" Solid Snake and Otacon are investigating the Marines' transportation of a new Metal Gear weapon. Snake infiltrates a tanker thought to carry it, and gets caught up in the middle of a terrorist takeover at the same time.
Raiden's mission comes 2 years later, taking place where the tanker sunk. In its place is the Big Shell, constructed to clean the oil spilled from the tanker.
