Transport Tycoon
Transport Tycoon is a computer game, where the player is in control of a transport company, and must compete with rival companies to make as much profit as possible, by transporting passengers and various goods by road, rail, sea or by air.
To start constructing a transport network, first the player must construct a station, or (air)port, as appropriate for the type of transport required. Two or more edifferent types of transport can share a station, and then both can collect people or goods from there. Here, the appropriate resources in the area accumulate, until picked up by a vehicles. The efficiency with which goods are collected and delived by each company is recorded, and a higher efficiency ranking will result in more customers using that station over other competing stations.
The other neccesary components of a transport network are the vehicles themselves, built at appropriate depots, and the roads or rails for the appropriate networks. Towns and Cities have their own road networks, but extra roads may be needed to connect them to other towns, or to various resources.
Once a resource or passenger load is picked up at one station, then delivered to another station. Near to where there is demand (a town demands passegners for example), a profit is awarded, depending on the delivery time, distance, and amount delivered. How important each factor is depends on the type of goods being delivered.
Subsidies are one way of the game encouraging the player to expand their network, rather than just use previously profitable routes. At time, subsidies are offered for delivery of one good between two particular place, and the first company to do so is awarded a subsidy for a certain period for that route, giving them extra profits.
Over time, cities develop and expand, and new factories, farms, and other resource sites, providing extra routes to profit from. Also, new, improve vehicles are introduced and eventually replace older models.
