In 2009, Adam Neumann and Miguel McKelvey established GreenDesk, a coworking space in Brooklyn centered around the idea that people working together in an efficiently designed space would be good for the planet. The business was successful financially, but Adam and Miguel believed that they could do more to change the world. In 2010, Adam and Miguel sold the business and started WeWork, which was founded on the belief that people work better together.
WeWork empowers entrepreneurs, freelancers and businesses to succeed by providing a collaborative community and services that allow them to focus their energy on growing both personally and professionally.
The company designs, builds and operates office space with all the amenities and services entrepreneurs and businesses need. WeWork also offers educational events and a collaborative community that make the work day more fulfilling and productive. Additionally, WeWork provides services like access to healthcare, discounted benefits, food and beverage, and digital networking tools.
WeWork currently operates nine locations in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In the burgeoning coworking industry, WeWork offers the largest platform by any measure, creating substantial network benefits to its members. In addition, this scale allows the company to lease, build, operate and market more efficiently than its competitors.

The business was successful financially, but Adam and Miguel believed that they could do more to change the world. In 2010, Adam and Miguel sold the business and started WeWork, which was founded on the belief that people work better together.
In January 2012, the company raised $6.85M in funding. [1]
In November 2012, the company purchase the lease of a 103,000-square-foot office building at 175 Varick Street in Tribeca for $33.5 million. [2]
On June 27, 2013, WeWork officially opened their second San Francisco location in the six floors above the theater. This new WeWork Golden Gate location will provide collaborative workspace for approximately 200 small businesses and startups. [3]
And in summer 2013, WeWork signed onto rent the entire 56,000-square-foot building at 54 West 40th Street, where it’s adjacent to Bryant Park. [4]
WeWork now has appximately 5,000 members and is home to nearly 400 entrepreneurs and 200 startups including Consmr, Turf, Fitocracy, Reddit and New York Tech Meetup. [5]
WeWork Labs is the creation of Jesse Middleton, Matt Shampine, and Adam Neumann. It launched in April 2011 as affordable, communal office space for entrepreneurs in New York City. It’s a space for people of all backgrounds (marketing, PR, design and IT) to brainstorm, collaborate and develop companies. [6]
WeWork Labs opened their Los Angeles location in June 2012. [7]
They moved to 175 Varick St. where they have 17,000 square feet of office space in February 2012. [8]
In August 2013, WeWork moved its headquarters from 175 Varick Street to 120,000 square feet at 222 Broadway. [9]
The company is also known for its events and parties.
WeWork Labs hosts numerous events in the space including demo days, happy hours, WilmerHales’ summer legal series, member run lunch-and-learns and lunches with JWT’s Chief Creative Digital Officer and Director of Trendspotting. [10]
In August 2012, the company organized a trip for members to the Adirondack Mountains, where it took over a summer camp at Raquette Lake for a three-day networking event. [11]
WeWork has plans to open more in Boston, D.C., and Seattle by the end of this year. [12]
